Vice Mayor Jim Shulman
Jim Shulman has won the special election runoff to fill the vice mayor seat left vacant upon David Briley’s election as mayor in May.
Shulman, an at-large member of the Metro Council, and fellow Councilmember Sheri Weiner first faced off on Aug. 2, when Weiner bested Shulman by more than 3,000 votes, but neither was able to secure a majority of votes, triggering the runoff. Matt DelRossi, a third candidate, secured 12 percent of the vote in the first round.
Shulman, a Green Hills district council member prior to his election as an at-large representative, was endorsed by the Davidson County Democratic Party, though the election is nonpartisan. Weiner conceded to Shulman and congratulated him less than an hour after polls closed, a representative told the Scene.
"Jim and I have worked closely over our time on the Council and I look forward to supporting him as he leads our body through the coming year," Weiner wrote on Facebook Thursday night.
Weiner, as speaker pro tem of the council, had held the seat in an acting capacity since Briley first assumed the office of mayor upon Megan Barry’s resignation in March. Weiner gave up the job late last month when the Metro Council chose Councilmember Burkley Allen as its new speaker pro tem.
Shulman will hold the seat until 2019, when Nashville voters will elect a vice mayor to a full four-year term.
