The Charlotte Avenue Church of Christ (4508 Charlotte Avenue in Richland Park), constructed in 1921, is a Gothic Revival church owned by the Charlotte Heights Church of Christ congregation. Founded in 1889, the congregation has been trying to sell the church for years to raise money, with which they would build a new church on property it purchased two miles away.
Their hopes were dashed when developers for a Rite Aid Pharmacy dropped plans to buy the property because of neighborhood opposition, similar to the furor over the failed attempt to save the Jacksonian. The property is currently on the market and its future is cloudy, according to David Price.
"That is such a neat, iconic historical area," the Tennessee Historical Commission's Pat McIntyre tells the Scene. He points out, however, that church preservation in Nashville has "a long history, and not a good one." Most recently, the Community Baptist Church, a historic church in the Woodland in Waverly neighborhood designed by Hugh Cathcart Thompson, was bulldozed to make way for condos.
