If July 2014 is to be remembered, it will be as the month former Haslam cabinet members bought new houses.
Two recently retired commissioners check in on the list, as does a trust for the benefit of Mayor Karl Dean's brother-in-law.
Also of note this month: a sale by the wife of auto dealer Lee Beaman, who last year purchased a fixer-upper (a rarity for Headline Homes, as the houses atop the market tend not to need much fixing) and apparently decided the fixing-up was too much bother.
As always, what follows are the top 10 home sales in Nashville and surrounding counties (though this month, the list ventures only as far afield as Brentwood) for July, ranked by sales price:
1. 533 Jackson Blvd., Belle Meade, 37205

This home on the corner of Jackson Boulevard and Gerald Place — "one of the most cherished corners in Belle Meade," per the listing — has five bedrooms across its nearly 7,700 square feet. It spent zero days on the market, which seems anomalous (except to folks who have been in the market for a home recently).
The Dentons are the proprietors of Denton Elliot, a high-end furniture and home decor importer, which means they'll have plenty of goodies to decorate a home that already includes vintage millwork and state-of-the-art electronics.
2. 4333 Chickering Lane, Forest Hills, 37215

Sitting on five acres in Forest Hills, this classic Georgian promises to be "exquisite and charming yet comfortable." The grounds include a saltwater pool and guest house. The main house — checking in at 9,380 square feet — has a "handsome library" to along with six bedrooms.
Buyer Joe Davis is the brother-in-law of Mayor Karl Dean and nephew of Joe Davis of Davis Coals, the renowned philanthropist who has nearly as many buildings named for him in Nashville as Andrew Jackson.
Seller David Solomon is the managing director of Meritage Funds, a growth equity firm.
3. 13 Colonel Winstead Drive, Brentwood, 37027

Former Bridgestone CEO and state Finance and Administration Commissioner Mark Emkes picks up this Governors Club home, a 14,500-square-footer that overlooks the golf course. (NB: Nearly every listing for the tony subdivision promises a view of the golf course.)
The house — in "Parade-Home condition" — has an owner's suite with fireplace, sitting room, breakfast bar (which is also available at Shoney's for far less than $2.45 million) and an elevator.

Another Governors Club entry (yes, it has a view of the golf course), this one purchased by Dave Lindsay, vice president of administration at filtration giant Clarcor. While wine cellars are fairly common on Headline Homes, this house also has a built-in coffee bar (barista not included).

July was the month for former Haslam cabinet members to make home buys, it seems. Steven Cates, former commissioner of the Department of General Services, shelled out for this Belle Meade home with a "park like" backyard.
The 8-year-old home includes "top of the line appliances, custom cabinetry, beautiful moldings, [and] walnut floors." What's more, the exterior is brick covered by real stucco; none of that fake stuff in Belle Meade.

In May 2013, Kelley S. Beaman — wife of Nashville automobile impresario Lee — became the owner of this stately Oak Hill estate, which long belonged to the Perry family of prominent Nashville homebuilders. Unusual for Headline Homes, it was sold as-is.
Just a touch more than a year later, she sells the 1930 home, and once again it goes as-is. The listing indicates the "house needs total renovation," and the kitchen and laundry room have been "removed." Despite this, she made $450,000 on the deal.
The listing also warns there are "important deed restrictions." A review of all the deeds of this property dating back to 1933 did nothing to reveal what those restrictions are.

Governors Club isn't the only subdivision with golf course views. This "spectacular pool home" in McGavock Farms has an "amazing" view of the track at Brentwood Country Club. Built in 2005, this home includes a "grand paneled library with fireplace" and an outdoor kitchen.
The Wallaces have appeared in Headline Homes three times — all as buyers. Their last two appearances were in August and October 2010.

Apparently the only thing better than being on "one of the most cherished corners" for buyers in Belle Meade — as our top home purports to be — is being on a dead-end street in Belle Meade, which gets bragged about so frequently in high-end home listings, one would think the enclave is prone to street gangs cruising the tree-lined streets.
Unusually, this home boasts five HVAC systems, making it the coolest house in the neighborhood — or the hottest.
