Laura's post about her first memory of Nevermind. I wish I had some comparatively formative memory to share with you, but here's the truth: I was 6 years old when Nevermind came out, and I actually was familiar with
"Weird Al" Yankovic's "Smells Like Nirvana"before I heard "Smells Like Teen Spirit." (Don't hate.) As a matter of fact, Yankovic's 1983 eponymous debut was one of the first cassettes I owned. It was given to me by my very tall cousin, who insisted on introducing every song by saying, "But it's not what you think!" Eventually I realized it was all going to be precisely what I thought it would be. And that's why we all love "Weird Al." It's going to be exactly what you think, and it's going to be the most innocuous and cheesily awesome form of funny.
So the Yank Meister will be bringing his Alpocalypse Tour to The Mother Church on Sept. 30. Tickets go on sale right here this Friday, July 22, at 10 a.m. See the Gaga-approved "Perform This Way" — the first single from Yankovic's Alpocalypse and a parody of Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" — above.
