Waxahatchee
With her latest album Ivy Tripp, Waxahatchee (aka Katie Crutchfield) has crafted one of the best releases of the year. On the gorgeous, simple opening song “Breathless,” the buzz of a bad cable connection hums beneath ethereal synth notes that flow in and out like whale songs while Crutchfield sings softly, but with insistence, about not wanting to settle for the current relationship she’s being offered. She’s not frustrated though, and she’s not messy when facing the restlessness that she addresses over and over again.
“La Loose,” a song about how what’s great now will come to an end, is peppy — fun, even — with a kicky drum-machine beat and a chirpy chorus of bright woo-hoo-hoos ringing in the chorus. Even though Ivy Tripp is poppier than Crutchfield’s previous efforts, the songs still feel minimalistic. But it’s not that Crutchfield is stripping things down to the core, it’s that she’s building them up just enough, carefully composing each sonic moment with a thoughtfulness that ensures the record will hang in time.
Tonight's show kicks of at 9 p.m. and costs $14-$16. Weyes Blood and Try the Pie open.
