Just seven months ago, Nashville-residing breakthrough country songster
Sturgill Simpson and his crew of top-tier sidemen played "Life of Sin" on The Late Show With David Letterman. Since then, Sturgill has won
an award or two, not to mention gracing the cover of the Scene for
our annual Country Music Critics' Poll issue— speaking of which, revisit my interview with Simpson
hereif you're into that sort of thing.
Well, déjà vu time. Simpson & Co. popped up on The Late Show once again last night, where they played "Long White Line," a song written by Buford Abner and familiar to Aaron Tippin fans from its appearance on the 2009 collection of truckin' tunes In Overdrive. "Long White Line" — along with When in Rome's "The Promise" — is one of two covers that appear on last year's excellent Metamodern Sounds in Country Music. Watch the performance above, and get a load of lead guitarist Laur Joamets' killer solo. So, considering Dave's hilarious reaction to Sturgill's last appearance, what did he have to say this time?
"Oh my God. Nice going. That was fantastic. That was beautiful. Thank you very much. That's how I sound when I sing! Tremendous." Classic Dave.
