Warner Bros. Drops JEFF the Brotherhood

JEFF the Brotherhood's Jake and Jamin Orrall

Last month, we shared with you details regarding home-grown psychedelic grunge-pop outfit JEFF the Brotherhood’s forthcoming release, Wasted on the Dream, which was set to come out March 10 via industry behemoth Warner Bros. Records. It was to be JEFF’s second full-length release since signing with Warner back in 2011, and in addition to the Dream track “Coat Check Girl,” the band also gave us a preview taste with the song “What’s a Creep.”

But it seems the plan, the dream and plans for the Dream have changed. JEFF tells the Cream via email that they are “SO FUCKING PLEASED to announce that we have been DROPPED from the clutches of the demented vulture that is Warner Bros.”

Whoa. Bridge. Burned. The Brothers Orrall also say that Wasted on the Dream will now drop March 24 via their own longtime DIY label Infinity Cat. It's at least good to know the band won't have to fight to keep the record from sitting and collecting dust in Warner's vaults for some protracted period of time. When it comes to doing the major label thing, if you're gonna dance with the devil, do try and set it up in a way that lets you walk away with your masters.

Here’s the full statement from the band:

Hello friends and fans and family and hello people of the press and people of the industry! We, JEFF The Brotherhood, are SO FUCKING PLEASED to announce that we have been DROPPED from the clutches of the demented vulture that is Warner Bros! We feel as though a heavy weight has been lifted from our shoulders, and could not be more excited.

As for our album, "Wasted on the Dream", it is finally coming out March 24th on Infinity Cat Recordings — our spiritual, as well as literal home.

It was a very strange experience working with WBR. Luckily, we help to run an indie label that has its shit together more than the big guys, and the announcement comes today from Infinity Cat. The records are pressed, and we are poised and ready!

It's true what you've heard, the era of the major label is over, we have seen it first hand. Upwards and onwards!

JEFF The Brotherhood

Both the subtext and, well, the actual damn text of JEFF's statement seem to indicate that the band wasn't pleased with the level of attention granted to their efforts — and if that's the case, it certainly wouldn't be the first time a somewhat small outfit felt neglected at a very large label. As Orrall patriarch-slash-iCat honcho Bob Orrall recently told the Cream, Wasted on the Dream has been in the can for several months. So what was the hold-up?

Well, nothing now.

JEFF the Brotherhood's next in-town gig will be at local punk fest Freakin' Weekend VI, which goes down March 12-14. Tickets to that are available here.
