Social Distortion Sets Ryman Gig to Celebrate 25th Anniversary of Eponymous Album

As some of us patiently await for the 25th anniversary treatment of arguably the greatest year in music, 1991, there are still a few nostalgic stops along the way to enjoy in the meantime. Among this year’s crop: Social Distortion’s self-titled major-label debut turned 25 on March 27, and recieved the reissued treatment with a Record Stored Day. The band’s current incarnation (featuring frontman and sole original member Mike Ness) is celebrating with a six-week tour, playing the record in its entirety as well as “classic tracks and rarities from their extensive back catalog’. They’ll play the Ryman Auditorium on August 29 with Drag the River and Nashville’s own Nikki Lane opening. Tickets go on sale this Friday at noon, right

Social Distortion isn’t exactly one of my favorite bands, nor is Social Distortion among my favorite albums, though it is my favorite Social Distortion album, and a particularly sentimental selection. The world premiere of its lead single and video “Ball and Chain” (watch it after the jump) coincided with the night I discovered MTV’s 120 Minutes. Months later, after acquiring my first dual cassette deck, Social Distortion became the first music I ever pirated after I dubbed it and Surf Punks' Oh No! Not Them Again! (an even more oddly affectionate relic) onto a fresh blank tape.
