Pizza Underground
If you like to partake in music debates (Beatles vs. Stones! Blur vs. Oasis! Kanye West vs. The World!), perhaps you’d enjoy discussing the artistic merit of an outfit known as The Pizza Underground. Led by a thespian you may have heard of — Macaulay Culkin — these NYC novelty art-rockers unabashedly reinterpret Velvet Underground songs with pizza-themed lyrics. You’ll have to judge for yourself whether the group’s “Satellite of Love” adaptation (“Have a bite of crust”) is blasphemous or hilarious (or both), because not everyone’s in on the joke.
Earlier this year, an audience in Nottingham, England, booed PU offstage (footage after the jump) by throwing full beers at them, which is a crime against beer, pizza and humanity. I have to say, though, as a big fan of bands that have close ties to pizza — ShowBiz Pizza’s Rock-afire Explosion, anyone? — I’m willing to give these guys a shot. Admit it, aren’t you a little curious to see if The Pizza Underground is in fact an expertly executed, humorous parody-slash-tribute that would make Andy Warhol giggle (probably not), or a half-baked side project that would make Lou Reed roll over in his grave (probably)? If nothing else, I hear there will be actual pizza there via Two Boots Pizza … but don’t throw it, even if the band sucks — we have too much respect for the High Watt to abide such behavior.
This Pizza party starts at 9 p.m., costs $15-$17 (wow) and Har Mar Superstar opens.
