this week's dead-tree edition of the Scene— hot off the presses just this morning — and you'll find contributor
Jewly Hight's interview with onetime Civil War and current solo artist Joy Williams. "To be a woman and to be sexual," Williams tells Hight, "and to be expressive, and to be loving, and to be weak and strong and scared and a fighter, and to move forward is something that's important to me." This is all part of the thought process that informed Williams' brand-new Venus, out this week via Sensibility Music/Columbia Records.
About two months ago, Williams unveiled the revealing video for Venus' "Woman (Oh Mama)" — the clip featured interpretive dancing, big hand gestures, cosmic rays, some sort of fire dancer and more. Now, Williams has some more visual accompaniment for a Venus track. Above you can see Williams' new video for "Until the Levee," which features footage from live performances, wherein the singer utilizes loads of cosmic imagery while standing in front of what looks at least a little bit like one of the stargates from Stargate. It's imagery that works well with the tense, down-tempo feel of the song. Give it a look.
