Yesterday, we found out we lost Ellie Greenwich, whose co-writing credits include, uh, the '60s. "Be My Baby," "Da Doo Ron Ron," "(And) Then He Kissed Me," "Leader of the Pack" and (another) one of my favorites, the Shangri-Las' "Out in the Streets." The
listgoes on. (I found about her death right around the time I was posting
Jessica Hopper's playlist, which includes a reference to the Girl Group Sounds box set that Greenwich is all over.)
Today brings word that Larry Knechtel has died. You may or may not know his name, but he's the Guy Who Played That Part on That Song, many times over. Organ on "Good Vibrations," piano on "Bridge Over Troubled Water," guitar all over the works of Duane Eddy. The list goes on. Sasha Frere-Jones has posted a nice remembrance from friend Matt Sweeney.
You're a mean one, 2009.
