Laura Cantrell is perhaps the only person in the history of country music to launch her (sort of) hillbilly career by moving from Nashville to Brooklyn. She's also a gifted singer and songwriter, championed by no less an admirer than the late John Peel, and her long-running Radio Thrift Shop show on New Jersey's glorious WFMU is still available online in archives. (We were proud to hear her listed as a donor during The Best Show on WFMU's recent on-air pledge marathon.)
At 1:30 p.m. tomorrow, Cantrell repays her debt to the Queen of Country Music, Kitty Wells, with a special afternoon show at the Country Music Hall of Fame. In conjunction with the Hall of Fame's ongoing Wells exhibit, Cantrell will discuss her influence and perform live with a stellar band that includes Paul Burch, Mark Winchester and Chris Scruggs. Afterwards, at 3 p.m., she'll sign copies of her own recordings.
It'll be one of the weekend's coolest events. The show is free with museum admission.
