One of Music City's most exciting and best-feeling music stories of 2016 was the launch of low-power community radio station WXNA, an effort organized by a group of former community DJs from Vanderbilt's student radio station WRVU. Through the efforts of more than 80 volunteer DJs, the station has been pumping out 16 hours or more of original programming every day since its official sign-on in June.
The station's debut schedule offered lots of old favorites as well as intriguing, thoughtful shows and DJs that have become new favorites, all accessible with a flick of your dial or a click of your mouse. But it's been a little more than six months since WXNA took to the airwaves. That means it's time for a whole new schedule, which was announced Tuesday and will go into effect on Monday, Feb. 13.
There's a good bit you'll be familiar with if you've been a regular listener: Transmission and Out the Other on Monday nights, Hipbilly Jamboree! Tuesday afternoon, Nashville Jumps on Friday morning, Aging Hipster Friday evening, From the Basement and Hot Fudge Tuesday on Saturday afternoon, and so on.
A few things have moved. Doyle Davis' D-Funk is now a Wednesday lunchtime experience instead of a Friday night cruise soundtrack, and DJ Ron Slomowicz's syndicated Ironic Luxury is now on Friday nights instead of Mondays, which is a good fit — though it's adjacent to a time slot vacated by another bangin' dance program, Melted Clock Radio, which alas is no longer on the schedule.
And perhaps best of all is the treasure trove of new stuff: Nekos Barnes adds some much-needed hip-hop to the mix with The Root, Mondays at noon; longtime champion of experimental music Chris Davis returns to the airwaves with Sea Ship Auricle, Tuesdays at midnight; Kelsey Delaney explores "musical D.I.Y. scenes around the U.S." on Cities Under Cities, Fridays at 11 p.m.
And there's more where that came from. Check out an image of the full schedule below or click here to download a PDF. If you'd like to support the station, there's a donation button on the website. They've also just announced that Kay Bob's in Hillsboro Village is hooking them up with a monthly fundraiser: On the third Wednesday of every month (the next one of those being next Wednesday, Feb. 15), 15 percent of sales from 5-11 p.m. will go to WXNA.
