In the new video for "Listen Up," the second single from her upcoming fourth full-length Goodnight Rhonda Lee, Nicole Atkins finds herself having to make the best of being stuck in a rough spot. Confined to a hospital bed, she watches as an America's Funniest Home Videos-style show replays her least-smooth moments on TV for all the world to laugh at. And to add an extra insult to her injuries, the remote is juuuust out of reach.
The clever vid goes hand in hand with the lesson of the song. "I wrote 'Listen Up' as a note to self — to stop beating myself up over bad self-talk and fear and listen to the good advice of others," she told NPR. "It's basically, 'Don't be your own worst enemy. Surround yourself with good people and let them help you.' "
The song is a wonderfully soulful blues-rock track, borrowing from the classic sounds of Aretha Franklin and Carole King. It playfully grooves and bounces along into each chorus, while Atkins' timeless voice soars above the band. Check it out above.
Atkins is currently on tour, but you've got several chances to catch her in town soon. She'll be back in time to perform May 23-24 for Dylan Fest at the Ryman (tickets here), and she'll play a free show in Centennial Park on May 26 as part of Musicians Corner's Acoustic Friday Night series.
Goodnight Rhonda Lee will be released July 21, and is available for pre-order through Atkins' website.
