Friday marked the 48th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court decision that made abortion legal in the U.S. Gov. Bill Lee marked the occasion by tweeting some nonsense about how a medical procedure isn’t health care. Amanda Shires and Jason Isbell appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon performing their duet “The Problem.”

Released as a single in September, the piece is a love song about a young couple deciding to terminate a pregnancy they aren’t ready for. It’s a tough enough decision on its own, which is then complicated by a range of social pressures and a lack of clear information as attempts to legislate a very personal situation continue. Thanks to the pandemic, Shires and Isbell didn’t appear in person on the show, but filmed a performance in their barn. Fans will recognize the space from Shires’ I So Lounging YouTube series that streamed last year.

Check that out above, and if you haven’t yet, take a listen to a group rendition called “Our Problem,” which hit the web on Thursday. It’s the same lyric, but with lines sung by an array of women whose music spans styles and generations: Angie Stone, Cyndi Lauper, K.Flay, Lilly Hiatt, Linda Perry, Morgane Stapleton, Nona Hendryx, Peaches and Valerie June all contribute.

There’s a way for you to take part as well. Shires has issued an open call for submissions that’ll be included in a music video for “Our Problem.” The finished piece will feature fans lip syncing to the song — check out Shires’ Instagram post for more details, including how to submit your work. The deadline is Feb. 1.

In addition to raising awareness for the ongoing fight to preserve a woman’s right to make decisions about her body, Shires is also encouraging folks to make a donation to the Yellowhammer Fund. The Alabama-based federally recognized nonprofit works on behalf of women’s reproductive rights, including serving as a source of clear and accurate information and advocating for policy changes.
