(C) 2019 Third Man Records

In just over a week, on June 21, you’ll be able to snag your own copy of Help Us Stranger, the third album overall and first since 2008 from The Raconteurs, the rock outfit featuring Jack White, Brendan Benson, “Little Jack” Lawrence and Patrick Keeler. While you wait, the quartet has one more pre-release track to lay on you. Above, check out the lyric video for “Bored and Razed.”

The song adds to the evidence that the album stems from some deep reflections on British rock of the 1960s. White referenced The Who in connection to The Racs when he spoke with Scene editor D. Patrick Rodgers in the fall; the record includes a Donovan B-side; and this song reminds me a bit of The Kinks at their gnarliest.

The lyrics come off as an intentional take on misheard lyrics, or mondegreens, if you will. The song is built around common phrases whose meanings Benson, White & Co. have twisted a little, subbing in words that scan similarly but mean something different: “born and raised” versus “bored and razed,” for example.

Visit Third Man’s site for more details on Help Us Stranger. You’ve got three chances to catch the group at the Ryman with Olivia Jean opening — but only if you’ve already scored tickets, as their shows (Aug. 29-31) are sold out.
