From left: Soccer Mommy and Bully at SXSW 2018
SXSW is in full swing, and our reporter on the ground tells us that Nashvillians were doing the damn thing down in Austin on Thursday evening. While many folks were deep in hangover territory on Thursday morning, Soccer Mommy's Sophie Allison and Bully's Alicia Bognanno did an on-air interview with Meghna Chakrabarti, who's been doing a commendable job as one of the hosts of On Point since WBUR — the Boston public radio station where the nationally distributed show is produced — dismissed host Tom Ashbrook in February.
Allison and Bognanno have both earned an impressive degree of national recognition for their work in a relatively short period of time. That's helped them develop keen perspectives on the contemporary music business as well as the ways that music scenes work, for good and ill, and how to make them work better, all while they've been figuring out what it is they want to say with their music.
The discussion orbits around the observation that a lot of the best, most interesting contemporary rock and rock-ish music is being made by women. There are some interesting questions and comments from callers too, and even an acoustic performance of Soccer Mommy's "Flaw." Check it out below.
