Lizzo at Cannery Ballroom, 5/7/2019
Bonnaroo got back into the groove in 2019, with one of its strongest bills ever and its first sellout since 2013. The lineup for Bonnaroo 2020 has been announced, and it’s got a wide array of offerings that looks to continue the trend.
At the top of the bill, you have a diverse collection of ringers. The Grand Ole Opry will broadcast live from the Farm on Thursday, while proggy metal faves Tool, who ended a 13-year drought of studio albums in August with Fear Inoculum, play Friday night. Rising superstar singer-rapper-twerker-flautist Lizzo — who dominated a tent stage at ’Roo 2016 and played Music City three times last year — headlines on Saturday. Aussie psych-pop outfit Tame Impala, who also last played Bonnaroo in 2016 and is set to release their new LP The Slow Rush on Feb. 14, returns to close out the fest on Sunday.
There’s a stack of notable acts just below the top tier, too. Also playing are Miley Cyrus, Bassnectar, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Lana Del Rey, Vampire Weekend, Leon Bridges, Rezz, Tenacious D and … Celtic punks Flogging Molly? Yep. Primus is coming, as is Oysterhead, the seldom-seen trio of Primus’ Les Claypool on bass, Phish’s Trey Anastasio on guitar and The Police’s Stewart Copeland on drums.
There’s a wealth of outstanding hip-hop up and down the lineup. Megan Thee Stallion, DaBaby, J.I.D, Denzel Curry and Young Thug represent the newer school. Run the Jewels admirably bridges the new school and the old. And for a 2000s throwback, look for Nelly playing Country Grammar in its entirety.
Dig just a tiny bit deeper into the poster, and there are even more delights. Brittany Howard will be there, following her phenomenal Grammy-nominated 2019 solo album Jaime, as well as fellow soulful Grammy nominee Yola. Mysterious Canadian country crooner Orville Peck is coming, as will amazing Tuareg guitarist Mdou Moctar, rising rock outfit The Regrettes, inventive percussionist Makaya McCraven and electro-hip-hop ace Yaeji.
Tons more locals are ’Roo-bound, too. Among others, look for Larkin Poe, Liz Cooper and the Stampede, Briston Maroney, Devon Gilfillian, Billy Strings and recently arrived Southern jam-rockers The Marcus King Band.
Among special presentations, your Saturday night Superjam is being curated by Sylvan Esso, and it’s called “Sylvan Esso presents: With.” Funk band Turkuaz is celebrating the 40th anniversary of Talking Heads’ Remain in Light with help from the Heads’ utility man Jerry Harrison and guitarist’s guitarist Adrian Belew, who played a significant role in recording and touring that album. Another guitarist’s guitarist, Bill Frisell, is bringing his Harmony project.
And there’s tons more to dig into. Take a look at the full lineup, broken down by day from June 11-14, below and on the poster. Four-day GA passes start at $319 and go on sale Thursday, Jan. 9, at 11 a.m. central right here.
