A few years back, Joy Oladokun joined the throng of great musicians who’ve moved to Nashville in part because of an abundance of great songwriters. Her 2020 LP In Defense of My Own Happiness (Vol. 1) is a testament to phenomenal talent.
The album, which we crowned Best Musical Expression of Self-Care in our Best of Nashville issue, is a gentle-sounding record that packs a powerful punch in its philosophical consideration of the intersections of race, faith and sexuality. The work has earned Oladokun an array of accolades and placements for her songs in TV programs. Last night, she made her late-night television debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon with a performance of the Defense song “Breathe Again,” which you might have heard on This Is Us last year.
Above, see Oladokun follow the contours of the ballad with an ace pianist and string section at what looks like Ocean Way’s Studio A on Music Row. It’s a nuanced performance of a song that looks at the difficulty of opening up to those close to you. You’ll have another chance soon to see Oladokun in Your Attention Please: The Concert, a special produced as part of the Hulu documentary series on Black innovators. The streaming concert premieres Thursday, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m., and includes performances from 24KGldn, Kiana Ledé, Lil Yachty and Swae Lee, too. Visit your favorite record store or Oladokun’s web site to get a copy of In Defense of My Own Happiness (Vol. 1), and follow her on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter for updates.
