Janelle Monáe at Bonnaroo, 6/13/2014
On a day marked by crummy weather and the horrific unfolding news about the shooting at a Waffle House in Antioch, here's a pretty phenomenal bright spot. Janelle Monáe, one of the most innovative minds in pop and R&B music and one of the most engaging entertainers on this planet (as well as on any other, I'd wager) is releasing her new LP Dirty Computer on Friday, April 27. Even better, her summer tour for said record will swing through Music City.
Monáe and her band are due to stop in at the Ryman on Friday, July 13. St. Beauty, a signee to Monáe's Wondaland label, is the opening act. Prices haven't been announced, but tickets are set to go on sale next Friday, May 4, right here. The only downside I can think of to this is that it's happening at the same time as the Kesha and Macklemore show down the street at Bridgestone Arena.
Since 2007, Monáe has been releasing fantastic records that use pop and R&B to tell sci-fi-tinged stories that use androids to explore human nature and celebrate difference. You don't have to be a music fan to know Monáe's work (she played key roles in Hidden Figures and Moonlight), but if you haven't heard 2010's The ArchAndroid and 2013's Electric Lady, you're in for a treat.
A 44-minute film to accompany Dirty Computer — an "emotion picture," as Monáe calls it — is set to premiere April 26 on MTV and BET. Meanwhile, check out the four music videos released so far for tracks from Dirty Computer below.
