Guided by Voices to Wrestle the Beast

GBV at Cannery Row, 1/14/2011

Calling all scientists, journalists and pharmacists, robot boys and girls deserving of gold stars and Myrons known to echo like sirens with the endurance like the Liberty Bell: It's time to wave your exit flags and polish your valuable hunting knives, for Guided by Voices is headed our way.

Last time the pride of Dayton, Ohio, played our fair Music City was on Halloween 2016 at the OG Basement, a gig that doubled as a 59th birthday party for frontman Robert Pollard, one of the most prolific crafters of pop gems to ever rock a Tascam Portastudio. The attendance was capped at 200, but that'll be much less of an issue at The Basement East, where the latest incarnation of the band (consisting of Pollard with Bobby Bare Jr. and Doug Gillard on guitars, Mark Shue on bass and Kevin March on drums) will play on Saturday, May 19. Tickets are $25 and on sale right here.

January 2017's GBV album August by Cake marked the 100th release credited to Pollard, which was followed by How Do You Spell Heaven in August. The next GBV record is due March 23, and it's called Space Gun. There's a sweet music video for the Space Gun song "See My Field" featuring a youngster named Ezekiel McCloud, who embodies the spirit of Uncle Bob. Check that out below.
