Flying Lotus Is Headed to Marathon Music Works

In the four-years-and-change since his widely acclaimed fifth LP You’re Dead!, it’s a wonder that Flying Lotus (aka Steven Ellison) has had any time to work on his own music. The L.A. Beat Scene pioneer and electro-jazz-bap super producer (and great-nephew to the late Alice Coltrane) has worked on a heap of projects. Among other things, he contributed to Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly; he runs his own label, Brainfeeder; he’s composed for short films; and he made his feature film directorial debut with Kuso, an experimental body-horror comedy that premiered at Sundance in 2017.

However, FlyLo recently announced a mammoth new project, a 27-track album titled Flamagra, due May 24 via Warp Records. It’s a star-studded affair with contributors including George Clinton, Thundercat, Solange, Denzel Curry and tons more. 

He’s also announced a tour, which brings him to Marathon Music Works on Sept. 4. Tickets for the all-ages show run $27.50-$60 and go on sale Friday, May 17, at 10 a.m. right here.

Flying Lotus has released two tracks from the album so far: “More,” a warped jazz adventure featuring Anderson .Paak, and “Fire Is Coming,” a spoken-word collaboration with eccentric legend of film David Lynch. In the accompanying music video for the latter, Lynch appears in the middle of a gang of feral children dressed as wolves, and tells them an unsettling tale. Check them both out below.
