Cream Premiere: The Medium Looks Back on 'Good Ol' Days' [Fresh Track]

In 2017, about two years into its life as a band, the Nashville four-piece The Medium released a collection of mostly lo-fi home recordings, made at various times in the band’s short span. After spending a large chunk of the last year touring across the country (playing houses and other venues, occasionally finding a stage strewn with VHS copies of Titanic), they’re ready to release their official debut single. Today, the Cream is excited to premiere “Good Ol’ Days.”

“It’s a good overall representation of our sound,” bass player and vocalist Sam Silva tells us via phone. “It’s the most The Medium song we have.”

What exactly is a song that sounds like The Medium? That's ... a little variable. “I think that depends on the week, the day, the month, the hour,” says Silva.

What you can hear in “Good Ol’ Days” are influences from bands that helped fix the template for pop music in the ’60s and ’70s like Badfinger and The Beatles, leaning toward the psychedelic tendencies of the latter. Still, the group is moving to define its sound, and they've established a strong foundation.

On this polished track, Silva & Co. seem to look back at times when the world was a less-stressful place: "Ignorance is nothin’ when your brain’s already ruined," they sing, before bursting into elegantly layered harmonies on the refrain "Remember the good ol' days?" Basic tracks were laid down in a friend’s garage with overdubs done at home, and with their friend Jake Davis (whose work you may have heard on Rainsticks’ Elkmont) producing. The group says they plan to record this way in the future, as well — feature a sophisticated string arrangement like the one presented here is something new and exciting for the group, as well.

Stream the song below and find it on your favorite download or streaming service. You can also catch the group in person, opening for The Nude Party and Glove on Saturday at the O.G. Basement. Keep up with The Medium on Facebook and Instagram for updates on future releases, too.
