Lyrics:
It doesn’t make any sense
I’ve fallen short this time
I blocked all your kicks and punches
Turned a blind eye to your crimes
But you’ll hold me in contempt
For being who I always was
Crackin’ jokes about the drummer
Drinkin’ jack and coke ‘til dawn
And I’ve got tequila in my beard
Room full of shots all around
The taste of dirt makes me feel better
As if I’m closer to the ground
And I’ve got a rock inside my shoe
Diamonds underneath my feet
Just don’t tell me what to do
‘Cause truth is always real even when you try to run away from it
Cowards never see the end because they don’t know it exists no, no
They don’t know it exists
I took your picture from the frame
And scratched both eyes out
And it hasn’t changed a thing
You’ve been blind for years no doubt
This has become amateur hour
That I’ve lost the time for
So I’m packing up my things
And I’m headed out the door
I’ve got a mountain in my mind
I’ve got the ocean in my blood
I set the arcade on fire
Somethings are never what they were
And I’ve found some solace in myself
Diamonds stuck between my teeth
Just don’t tell me what to do
‘Cause truth is always real even when you try to run away from it
Cowards never see the end because they don’t know it exists no, no
They don’t know it exists
I took your picture from the frame
Scratched both eyes out
And it hasn’t changed a thing
Watching people you're close to as they try to navigate the end of a long-term relationship can be a nerve-racking exercise in sorting out a sea of conflicting emotions. Jessey Clark, songwriter and frontman of Music City rock group Creature Comfort, was greatly affected by watching a friend's marriage unravel.
"I value the truth a lot, and I was trying to channel how he must be feeling," writes Clark. "These kinds of situations can make you wonder. … Whose side of the story is closest to reality?"
The result of turning the story over in his mind is “Arcade Fire,” a song that will be officially released on streaming platforms on Friday (pre-save it here), and which we're very pleased to premiere today. Above, take a listen to the propulsive track. The lyrics carry a good deal of bitterness and regret that the character who's singing is still trying to process.
The song is set to be included on Hometeam, the group's long-in-the-works full-length album recorded with Athens, Ga., producer-engineer Drew Vandenberg. Vandenberg's credits run the gamut from Of Montreal and Futurebirds to Faye Webster and Toro y Moi, and that suits the expansive sensibilities of Creature Comfort well. The group's sound, which they've dubbed “bootgaze,” has borrowed from rock, folk and psychedelic pop. “Arcade Fire,” which is named for a reference in the lyrics to burning down an actual arcade, doesn't sound much like the Canadian band of that name; it's a bit closer to much-loved Australian psych outfit Tame Impala.
To celebrate the official release of the single, the group will perform a livestream via The East Room's Facebook page and their own Twitch stream simultaneously on Friday night at 7 p.m. Keep an eye on the group's website and social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok) for updates on Hometeam and future streams.
