Community Meeting Sheds Light on the Future of Riverside Village [Updated]

Fond Object in East Nashville on opening day, 4/20/2013

On Monday, a community meeting at Inglewood's Isaac Litton Middle School shed a little more light on future development in Riverside Village. The construction proposal presented at the meeting has the potential to bring significant changes to the area as a whole, and particularly the property that's home to much-loved record store and venue Fond Object's original location on the East Side, among other businesses.

As Scene contributor Charlie Zaillian reports for our sister publication Nashville Post, the current plan calls for rezoning that plot of land and leaving the building that houses Fond Object in place. A collection of two- and three-story residential structures would go up on other parts of the property, yielding 33 apartments.

Though not set in stone, the plans show another business replacing Fond Object in the space: a vintage motorcycle showroom/pizzeria concept called Moto-Moda, to be run by business partners Jimmy Pruitt and Andy Mumma (the latter of whom owns the Barista Parlor chain of coffee shops). "We want people to want it," Mumma told the crowd. "If you don’t want it there … we’re not going to force our way in.”

Zaillian notes that there seem to be few enthusiastic supporters, though the reaction to this plan was better than to another plan that circulated early last year. Some musicians and other area residents have expressed strong opposition. Another public hearing regarding the project is set for a Metro Planning Commission meeting at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, at the Sonny West Conference Center, located at 700 Second Ave. S.

Update: The Oct. 25 meeting will be at 4 p.m. at the Metro Board of Education office, 2601 Bransford Ave.
