"Ten years from now, people are going to be like 'What the fuck was Thelma and the Sleaze doing?' "
TATS frontwoman Lauren Gilbert is referring, of course, to the glam-punk group's Kandyland intra-city tour, which saw them play 31 shows over the 29 days of February 2016 — rain, sleet or snow be damned — in spaces running the gamut from DIY venues and record stores to fast food joints and a coin laundry. Oh yeah, and they gave away a minivan during the last show — like The Price Is Right with more cigarettes and booze.
As the Best Local Rock Hustle went down just shy of a year ago, Scene contributor Seth Graves was there with a film crew to capture the spectacle. Now a feature-length documentary called Kandyland: The Movie is ready for its world premiere. Check out a 39-second teaser clip above, and then make plans to head to Little Harpeth Brewing to see the documentary in full next week.
The party (part of a "Quatrocity Tour" that also hits Birmingham, Ala., Memphis and Murfreesboro) kicks off at 9 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 13 and includes performances by Thelma, Butthole and Greyson Anderson of Dogs of Oz. Your $10 cover includes a limited-run vinyl copy of TATS' direct-to-disc recording "Where You Belong," and there'll be other special merch there, too. Keep an eye on the Facebook event page for updates.
