Every now and then an artist decides to get real with the possibilities of interpretive dance, and something magic happens. As a form of expression, nontraditional dance gets beaten with the irony stick and shoved to the bottom of the pile of visual arts more often than not in today’s cruel discourse. So it’s refreshing to see Murfreesboro’s master of muscular queerpop Jonny Gowow take a stab at incorporating it in his latest video, for his song “Oh John." Described by Gowow as "unnecessarily postmodern," the video has an assortment of just about everything that one could want in a music video — drama, dance, a little skin here and there, and a sense that anything can happen in the psychic theater of human desire. And it's all built around a peppy piano-rawk tune that lets the queer side of an unrequited love situation dictate the terms of its musical expression. There’s still no one else in or around Nashville like Jonny Gowow, and he performs regularly in solo shows and with his band, The Japanese Cowboys. Everybody likes to talk a good game about supporting original and distinctive voices. … So here’s your chance.
