Tubby Wrangling by Brandy Campbell

As you settle your brain for a long winter's nap — or possibly steel yourself to creep home over icy roads — here's a lysergic fairy tale courtesy of English transplant Robyn Hitchcock. With help from filmmaker Jeremy Dylan (and the assistance of Brandy Campbell as cat-wrangler, something you'll appreciate if you've ever tried to convince a cat to do anything), the much-loved punk-sci-fi-folk-mericana musician made a promo vid to accompany "Autumn Sunglasses," a psych-leaning track from his 2017 self-titled LP, his first since relocating to Nashville.

In the piece, Hitchcock falls asleep and wakes up to find himself inhabiting the body of Tubby V. Stardust, his one-eyed Scottish Fold cat. Gillian Welch drops by to help Hitchcock rehearse for a gig — not the easiest thing to do since he doesn't have thumbs. Later, Hitchcock gets whisked down to The 5 Spot for said show, still stuck in the cat's body. The whereabouts of Hitchcock's own body are unknown. It's possible that it (inhabited by Tubby) is running around naked, chasing squirrels down an alley in Lockeland Springs. But that is not addressed in this film.

“This song was written and set in Sydney, but the mood was just right this September in East Nashville,” Hitchock told American Songwriter, who premiered the video. “Gillian Welch, Harlowe Quinn from The 5 Spot (glimpsed on stage there with his band Prayer Flags), and Tubby my Scottish Fold cat are all local characters; they helped Jeremy Dylan and I crystallize the feel of summer turning to autumn here in Tennessee.”

Hitchcock is on deck to perform Jan. 20 during the second night of Mercy Lounge's 15th anniversary party — Jan. 19 is a showcase of local contemporary pop artists, and Jan. 20 features a rotating cast of choice Nashvillians backed up by the topflight tribute group The Long Players. You can see then whether or not he's been able to get back into his own skin. You can get a copy of Robyn Hitchcock at your favorite record shop or right here.
