Eminem at Bonnaroo, 6/11/2011
Bonnaroo 2017 came with a load of big questions — most of which pertained to whether or not the festival could recover from a notable drop in attendance in 2016, the first year it was under majority ownership by concert promotions giant Live Nation. For 2017, a stout bill was booked (topped by U2, The Weeknd, Chance the Rapper and Red Hot Chili Peppers), and, well, a lot of things went right. Ultimately, attendance bumped back up to around 65,000 (not packed out, but much healthier).
Now comes the tougher task: Maintaining the momentum in 2018 and beyond.
Today, festival organizers released the 2018 lineup, with Eminem, The Killers and Muse at the top of the bill. There's at least one key similarity to 2016, in that none of the top three has the benefit of being a fresh face atop the charts. Eminem is certainly the one of the three with the most cultural currency, thanks more to his freestyle tirade against Donald Trump at last October's BET Hip-Hop Awards than to Revival, the album he released in December — but especially based on his headlining turn at Bonnaroo 2011, the stage is where it's at for Marshall Mathers.
Further down the bill, things get even more interesting and less white-male-centric. There's Atlanta's Future, who released two albums of weary and troubled raps in 2017 that both debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. There's superstar EDM producer Bassnectar. There's Sturgill Simpson playing his closest gig to Nashville since A Sailor's Guide to Earth won the Grammy for Best Country Album last February (except for the time he busked outside the CMA Awards and collected donations for the ACLU). You've got great R&B, hip-hop and pop talent from younger generations — Khalid, Dua Lipa, Nashville's own R.LUM.R, Playboi Carti, Anderson .Paak, Thundercat, Brockhampton, Japanese Breakfast, onetime Nashvillian Mikky Ekko — and legends like Amadou & Mariam, Mavis Staples and Nile Rodgers and Chic. (And Chromeo in the same weekend? Be safe out there, kids.)
You've got rising expert songwriter Tyler Childers and somewhat controversial country outfit Midland (the one thing everyone seems to agree on is that this band performs well). You've got back-to-back DJ sets, something organized by the Grand Ole Opry (seemingly in place of the Bluegrass Situation Superjam), and the special Superjam set. Nashville talent appears all up and down the bill, from Paramore, Sheryl Crow and Moon Taxi to Blank Range, Ron Gallo, Okey Dokey, *repeat repeat and Biyo.
There are plenty of musicians that it'd be wonderful to see on this bill: Downtown Boys, Sheer Mag, A Giant Dog, Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, a left-field legacy act like Queen + Adam Lambert. The one absent artist who earlier seemed like a given is Jack White — he's playing several other festivals and is expected to release a new album soon. But at least for disappointed White-watchers, that ramps up the likelihood he's got some kind of super-sized release extravaganza planned in Nashville.
