Way back in July of 2010, the Creamer currently known as D. Patrick Rodgers put up
a post announcing an MGMT show at The Ryman. Days later, said show went on sale and sold out harder than
Rod Stewart at Christmas time. Well, for all you Middle Tennessee MGMT ticket holders, tonight is your night of reckoning. And for all you ticketless victims of your own poor planning, fear not: There are still PLENTY of
tickets availablefor Styx at the Ryman on the 11th. While I’m not planning on writing a Critic’s Pick in preview of that Dennis DeYoung-less happening, I did write one previewing tonight’s MGMT show. Take a gander at it in block quote form below. And if you’re more of a moving pictures type, watch the video above — it’s a clip featuring an amusing 2008 Q TV interview the group’s core duo, Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden, did with Great White Northern DJ and one-time undeserving target of
awk-master Billy Bob Thornton’s misguided neurosis, Jian Ghomeshi. In it, they talk of their collegiate formation, haphazard stardom, entomology, natural relaxation, people who enjoy vomiting, burning effigies to Bono (sad face), their dreams of living in Mexican sand castles by the sea, the inspirational power of major labels, Barack Obama as their dream producer, things they hate about Sheryl Crow (like her music), the pressure put on them to be spectacular masterminds, figuring out what pedals to use when opening for Radiohead, and other stuff.
