If you were given the task of making a time capsule mix of hits from the '90s buzz bin, Meat Puppets' "Backwater" could very well be your lead-off track. If you were going for some serious continuity, you would then follow it up with Nirvana covering the band's "Lake of Fire" on the Unplugged record. For most people, those songs are all they know of the band. Their association with Nirvana pigeonholed them as a '90s grunge outfit, despite the fact that they were releasing punk albums on SST as early as 1982. Since their brush with fame in the flannel era, the band has gone through break-ups, make-ups, gunshot wounds and stints in state prison.
Currently, things seem to be on the up and up for the band, as they are releasing a new record, Sewn Together, on May 12, to be followed by a tour that brings them to Exit/In on June 17. Opening acts will be Retribution Gospel Choir & Wax Fang. Tickets are $17.50 and can be purchased through the club's site. In similar news, the Toadies return to Exit/In on June 4. Do you wanna dieeee?
