Your boy Jack White has his fingers in an awful lot of pies these days. I mean, what else is new. But lately, these pies are particularly ambitious in scope — pies like
being a shareholder in Jay Z's recently unveiled streaming service Tidal, or once again making
big plansfor Record Store Day.
Anyway, let's set aside the pie analogy for a second and get down to brass tacks here: This morning, White's Third Man Records announced that the onetime White Stripes frontman is teaming with legendary producer T Bone Burnett and iconic actor/director Robert Redford to present American Epic, a "three-part historical documentary," as well as "The American Epic Sessions feature-length recording studio film." The series will air on PBS and BBC Arena this fall, and will follow "the trail of record company talent scouts from the late 1920s as they toured America with a recording machine to capture the raw expression of an emerging culture whose recordings would lead to the development of the blues, country, gospel, Hawaiian, Cajun and folk music."
Also, because it's Jack White, the filmmakers "re-assembled the recording machine that allowed America to first hear itself" and "replicated the atmosphere of America’s seminal 1920s field recordings." As you can see in the teaser trailer, contemporary artists including Beck, Alabama Shakes, Elton John, Merle Haggard, Ashley Monroe, Taj Mahal, Raphael Saadiq and White himself participated in the sessions. Also, TMR plans to issue a deluxe vinyl box set to accompany American Epic. Epic indeed. Watch the trailer above, and stay tuned for further details.
