Yeah, I said it, Empire is the best music show on television. Fox’s epic hip-hop drama had one of the dopest, soapiest premiere seasons in recent TV history. The show’s writing managed to balance music industry scandal with even more scandalous family situations to create a narrative that masterfully navigated high-brow aspirations with the low-brow needs of network drama to create captivating stories. It’s basically Nashville, but with great writing instead of hackneyed drivel.
(Sorry, dudes, Nashville isn’t a good show once you get passed the novelty of seeing your local strip mall on the flat screen. It’s awesome that we all have friends that are getting song placements, but let’s be honest — that shit is almost unwatchable. /rant)
But Empire is also a show that needs massive amounts of talent to keep it going, and to that end the producers are bringing the Empire Experience Auditions to Walk of Fame Park this Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. All you have to do is drop a killer version of an Empire Season 1 cut — I would go with “You’re Beautiful” cuz that’s my jam, but “Nothing To Lose” or “No Apologies” are hella hot too — in the Empire Experience mobile studio and BOOM! you could be the next Empire Records artist.
Considering how thirsty Nashville cats can be when there’s an opportunity to get on TV , I’d say show up early and pack a lunch because this audition is bound to big event. If you’re not the type to wait in line, the homies over at 101.1 The Beat are holding a contest that will let you cut the line. But whatever you do, try out. Please, for me. I was gonna watch season 2 anyway — again, it’s the best show on TV — but it would be super-sweet to see some of the Nashville crew gettin’ dramatic at the Empire offices.
Now let’s all enjoy the inspirational magic of Empire matriarch Cookie Lyons, in glorious GIF form of course.
