Sturgill Simpson looking angsty at Bonnaroo 2015.
For all the talk of their gritty "grunge" sound and screaming angst, Nirvana took over the world and changed rock music with the same tool most bands use (or at least used to use) — amazing pop tunes. And they knew it.
"He's the one who likes all our pretty songs," Kurt Cobain sang in the chorus of the now 25-year-old Nevermind classic "In Bloom," a song about Cobain's gun-loving, heroin-shooting, drone doom pioneering IRL best friend, Earth frontman Dylan Carlson.
In Sturgill Simpson's hands, "In Bloom" — which the so-called country savior covers on his highly anticipated LP, A Sailor's Guide to Earth — sounds prettier than ever, uplifting even. And all Stu had to do was slow it down, add some weeping steel guitar, strings and a major chord or two in there and adapt the lyric "and I say yeah" to "to be in love."
Hear it for yourself after the jump.
