Brown Sugar Bacon Caramel Apples from Chef's Market
The sugar is still rushing through my veins after sampling nearly everything there was to be had at last night's annual Sugar Rush party (no, really — anyone have any good dessert hangover remedies?). Over a dozen local bakers and candy makers set up shop in the Cannery Ballroom while hundreds of folks sampled their goods and faced the difficult task of choosing a favorite.
And the competition was tough — there were so many impressive desserts, including a fantastic compressed watermelon and lemon sorbet bite, a stunning pâte à choux filled with fresh fruit compote and served with freshly made vanilla-bean cotton candy, a variety of delicately flavored mini macarons and one of the best brownies I've ever had.
At the end of the evening, though, there could be only one Sugar Rush 2015 champion, the sweet genius who'd take home a trophy as well as secure a spot to compete in November's World Food Championships in Kissimee, Fla. And the winner was ... wait for it ... Chef's Market!
People were losing their minds over Chef's Market's Brown Sugar Bacon Caramel Apples, which were served with a spritz of bourbon.
Sadly for me, it was the one thing I couldn't eat at the event — I'm a vegetarian. No award winning bacon-covered apples for me. But clearly, those apples were done well.
Congratulations, Chef's Market!
For more Sugar Rush 2015 details, be sure to grab a copy of next week's paper — we'll have plenty of photos and even more to say about all of the amazing desserts (I just have to allow my blood sugar time to return to normal).
