Back in 2011, I caught Rachael Price singing Ronnie Shannon’s “I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Loved You)” as part of an Americana Music Association tribute to Muscle Shoals music. Performing with a band that included famed guitarist Jimmy Johnson, Price made the song her own. Having grown up in Tennessee — she graduated from Hendersonville High School in 2003 — Price attended the New England Conservatory of Music, where she formed Lake Street Dive with guitarist and trumpeter Mike Olson, drummer Mike Calabrese and bassist Bridget Kearney. The group cut five albums before signing to Nonesuch Records last year and recording its latest release, Side Pony, in Nashville with producer Dave Cobb. Price has jazz chops and sings in a pop-soul style on Side Pony, and the band creates light-footed arrangements that combine Motown and The Beatles. Pick to click: “Spectacular Failure,” which evokes Elvis Costello circa Get Happy!! EDD HURT
