Join The Porch for Free Writing Workshops in Church Street Park

After months of having to stay home and make my own fun, my imagination is tapped. And thanks to my gardening addiction, so is my wallet. If you also suffer from these afflictions, The Porch Writers’ Collective has got you covered with free creative writing workshops at Church Street Park. The workshops will take place at noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesdays, June 9 through July 14. In this week’s session, Anne Malin Ringwalt will lead an exploration into the role of voice in diary writing through communal reading and creative prompts. The workshop description teases: “When you write about your life, what are the stories you tell yourself?” If you’ve got aspirations for the stage, check out Steve Ettinger’s June 16 workshop, which will help you prepare your first-person story for an event like The Moth or Tenx9 Nashville. On June 23, join Scene favorite Meg Wade for a bold venture into writing about the pandemic — trust me, Wade is good for it. She’ll also lead workshops about Southern women’s voices (June 30) and protest poetry (July 7). After that, you can get otherworldly with Nathan Elias (July 14) and explore speculative fiction. The folks from Nashville’s excellent street paper The Contributor will be there hawking their latest issue as well as coffee, so bring a few bucks if you’d like to partake. There’s no need to register beforehand. Just show up, and The Porch will provide notebooks, pens and inspiration. Learn more at porchtn.org/happening/happenings. Noon-1 p.m. Wednesdays, June 9-July 14, at Church Street Park, 600 Church St. ERICA CICCARONE
