Jill Scott

This week, neo-soul icon Jill Scott will grace the Mother Church with her signature sultry vocals and expressive lyrics. Her acclaimed fifth studio album, 2015’s Woman, bolstered her impressive discography with soulful and jazzy hits like “Can’t Wait” and “Run Run Run.” In 2018, she released the compilation album By Popular Demand, which highlights some of the songs that helped her shape 21st-century R&B — from seductive slow jams like “He Loves Me (Lyzel in E Flat)” to upbeat tracks like “Golden.” In 2016, Scott was also featured on “Say Yes to This” on the celebrated Hamilton Mixtape. But her talents extend far beyond music. She’s appeared in two Tyler Perry movies, she models, and she began her career as a spoken-word poet. Her roots in poetry help her craft raw and vivid lyrics, which when backed by innovative jazz chords and ethereal harmonies, make Scott well worth a listen. 7:30 p.m. at the Ryman, 116 Fifth Ave. N. SARA SCANNELL
