Not to be confused with Gavin Rossdale’s short-lived side project of the same name, Austin, Texas’ Institute makes seething guitar rock that lives in a space between punk and post-punk. Their brand-new album Subordination uses arrangements that mock mechanical precision, and distorted tones that seem perfectly capable of stripping paint to enhance Moses Brown’s vitriolic, sometimes-only-partly intelligible lyrics. Tourmates Laffing Gas, who hail from Bloomington, Ind., take a similar approach with post-punk and hardcore punk, taking the influences of the two to create their own thing. Sonically, local outfit Brothers borrows significantly from the other bands its members are in, like Chainshot and Watcher, but there’s an undercurrent of Maiden-y metal in there that comes out even stronger if you listen to the lyrics: “Untold fictions unfolding before us / Who will protect us, after all is said and done?” goes “Marching Among the Dead.” For a more straightforward update on post-punk, look no further than also-local Silk and Suede, who round out the bill.
