Here’s the thing about Insane Clown Posse: Making fun of their carnival-core aesthetic is like shooting fish in a barrel. Yes, it’s easy to make fun of their cartoonish white-trash personas, their cartoonish white-trash music festival or their cartoonish white-trash lyricism. But if we’re going to be real here, Insane Clown Posse is one of the most successful independent rap groups in America. They’ve released 14 albums (two of them platinum records) and, for a generation of down-and-out outsiders, they represent something powerful. They’re still not good at rapping though.
