Nearly 20 years ago, India.Arie came on the scene with Acoustic Soul, an album full of folksy, black-and-proud numbers like “Strength, Courage and Wisdom” and her sensual, pro-melanin anthem “Brown Skin.” The record earned her double-platinum status and a lot of Grammy nominations. (Arie would later win the Grammy for Best R&B Album for 2002’s Voyage to India.) These days, she’s still winning over listeners with inspiring black-love ditties. Her latest single, “Steady Love” from this year’s Worthy, recently hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult R&B Songs airplay chart. The accompanying video also features Arie and rapper/activist David Banner as, well, a black couple in love. India.Arie’s continuing longevity in the music business proves that African Americans respond positively to artists who have a knack for showcasing black people doing positive black shit. 7:30 p.m. at the Schermerhorn, One Symphony Place CRAIG D.
