You Are What You

Garden Theatre Company is among the many small theater groups working on bold new plays at The Barbershop Theater. The spot, which was formerly home to DIY space Drkmttr (since relocated to the East Side), is a black-box theater with a mission to house progressive companies. Garden Theatre’s latest production, the world premiere of Pittsburgh-based playwright Mora V. Harris’ You Are What You, will navigate some intense terrain with a dark sense of humor. Francie is a competitive eater — she’s famous in the competitive eating community for her talent and technique — but her sister Trisha struggles with an eating disorder. Francie sets about to help. There’s also a celebrity chef and a talking pot roast. Jillian Frame directs an all-women cast that includes Christy Berryessa, Electra Meredith Daniel and Trisha Rosemary Fossee. What’s even better? The Garden Theatre Company offers free tickets and a full meal to Nashvillians experiencing homelessness. 7:30 p.m. Aug. 9-11 & 16-18 at The Barbershop Theater, 4003 Indiana Ave. ERICA CICCARONE
