It’s not every day an art museum turns into a hot spot for teenagers, but that’s exactly what’s happening this weekend at the Frist. With a full afternoon of entertainment planned, kids ages 13-19 can enjoy live music, a fashion photo booth and door prizes from Grimey’s, Plaza Art Supply, and Bongo Java. The museum’s studios will be open for creative exploration, and mural painters Woke3 and ArJae from the Norf Art Collective will lead teens in making a collaborative work of wall art. Norf is known for its varied approaches to community-based artworks that promote the history of North Nashville and current issues affecting the neighborhood, and participating in a project with Norf painters at the museum should be both fun and thought-provoking. The opening for Teens Take the Frist will take place in the upper level Education Corridor. The exhibition features art by 65 teenage artists from Middle Tennessee — including photography by members of the YMCA Black and Latino Achievers program — and the styles and themes should resonate with the energy and interests of teenage art lovers. Plus, it’s free. Opening event 1-4 p.m. July 13; exhibit runs through Sept. 21 at the Frist Art Museum, 919 Broadway SARA LEE BURD
