Kodachrome

For writers, the subject of love is a minefield of clichés. It’s tough to make a play about the topic feel fresh, so it’s deeply satisfying to see one that processes the stories, emotions and sheer awkwardness of falling in love with originality. Adam Szymkowicz is up to that task, and his new play Kodachrome will make its Nashville premiere at Actors Bridge Studio. The internationally acclaimed playwright should be familiar to Nashville theatergoers — Actors Bridge also produced Marian, or the True Tale of Robin Hood in 2018, and Hearts Like Fists in 2015. In Kodachrome, our tour guide is a photographer (played by Mary Claire Reynolds) who trains her lens on the many stages of her neighbors’ romantic relationships. Actors Bridge’s artistic director Vali Forrister says juicy roles for actors older than 40 are few and far between, and Kodachrome delivers on that front. Rachel Agee, a Nashville actress known for taking on challenging roles, makes her professional directorial debut here. The production also stars Barry Kennedy Jr., C.J. Tucker, Hayley Jo Pellis, Nyazia Martin, Hanna Lipkind and Ani Pareek — the latter of whom shone in this year’s Ingram New Works Festival. July 19-20 at Actors Bridge Studio, 4610 Charlotte Ave. ERICA CICCARONE
