Karina Khan, of the eponymous Porter Road bakery and cafe, elevates egg- and dairy-free desserts from funky-tasting whatsits (apologies to other vegan confectioners) into delectable, addictive treats. This isn’t a cookie-cutter business. Khan’s ubiquitous labels, for instance, display a mustachioed walrus and a pug. I found these distracting until my first bite. Now, at the sight of Khan’s sweets — peanut butter brownies, rose cupcakes, raw white chocolate blackberry “cheezcake,” chocolate-chip whoopie pies — the mascots portend bliss, and I start negotiating my way out of eating my vegetables first. Available in house and at eateries such as The Wild Cow and Edgehill Café.
