After leaving Nashville indie-pop band Paramore in 2010, drummer and founding member Zac Farro reinvented himself as a post-indie, post-’80s pop auteur, and began releasing a series of full-lengths and EPs under the name HalfNoise. It’s a good name for Farro’s solo project, since HalfNoise’s music describes the vicissitudes of modern romance in ways that sometimes come across like half-remembered dreams of utopian romance. Farro and his brother, Josh Farro, who played guitar and sang with Paramore, exited the band after complaining about the manufactured nature of the group’s music. Zac Farro has since rejoined Paramore, appearing on the 2017 full-length After Laughter. Farro’s comments about manufactured pop are interesting, since he obsessively repeats musical and verbal themes throughout all of HalfNoise’s releases. His 2016 full-length Sudden Feeling is a post-breakup album that bears comparison to the best of The Go-Betweens, though Farro’s musical vocabulary incorporates oddball percussion sounds and plenty of keyboards. Farro’s 2018 EP Flowerss is his most hard-edged music to date, but it’s just as obsessive as his earlier work. Groups Hogslop String Band and Bantug and DJs Sparkle City Disco will also perform.
