Amid the uproar over President Donald Trump’s orders cracking down on immigration to the U.S., including proposed “extreme vetting” for refugees and much more aggressive guidelines for deporting undocumented immigrants, many Americans are looking for ways to show their support for our immigrant communities. After all, welcoming immigrants is a core American value — one that has strengthened our country since its earliest days.
One obvious way to support immigrants is to patronize immigrant-run restaurants, and in Nashville we have an abundance of such businesses, especially along the Nolensville corridor, on Thompson Lane and on Charlotte Pike. That idea inspired Nashville designer Beth Mathews to create a list that has circulated on social media, identifying immigrant-run eateries in our city. Mathews — whose other projects include the Mom Bag, tote bags that are filled with supplies for arriving refugee women — topped her list with the slogan, “Supporting our immigrant community one bite at a time.”
Taking Mathews’ list as inspiration, we have compiled a slightly longer rundown of restaurants. We’d note that our list is hardly complete (a comprehensive version would probably run to many pages), and emphasize that it serves only as one step in helping the U.S. become a more welcoming and just nation.
