I've been fortunate enough to judge at a lot of competitive cooking events, and people frequently ask me how to get that gig. I have taken professional judging classes from several organizations including the Kansas City Barbecue Society, so there is some work involved. But it's deliciously fun work for the most part.
If you've ever wanted to sit in judgment, the organizers of the World Food Championships are offering an opportunity to get a taste of the action. On Tuesday, Aug. 4, they'll be leading a Food Champ Judging Class from 6 to 8 p.m. at Burger Republic in the Gulch. Participants will learn about the WFC's EAT (Execution, Appearance, Taste) judging system while enjoying taste tests of two championship burgers. You may recall that Burger Republic placed quite well at last year's WFC in Las Vegas.
In addition to the eating and learning, participants will also enjoy a flight of beers from Black Abbey and take home a goodie bag including a $10 gift certificate for future use at Burger Republic. After passing the course, the newly minted judges will receive priority to judge at future WFC-sanctioned competitions, including the World Championships in Kissimmee, Fla., Nov. 3-10.
Registration for the Food Champ Judging Class is $75 per person and is available online.
