El Mirador and the Other Ones With the Free Nibbles

This week's dining column features El Mirador, the Mexican eatery adjacent to K&S Market on Nolensville Road. In my vernacular, El Mirador will forever be The One With Beans & Slaw, because that simple salvo of refried beans and zesty citrus-laced cabbage is what stood out most in my experiences there.

Nothing sets the mood like nice free appetizers—or amuse bouches, as the fancy places call the really teensy ones.

Chips and salsa, of course, is the mother of all freebies. Taqueria Vallarta in Old Hickory opens with a memorable plate of salty grilled jalapenos. Noshville has free pickles, but you have to ask these days. Same with the biscuits at Cracker Barrel. Ombi used to treat you to a basket of truffled popcorn.

Who else offers notable no-charge noshes?
