Tacos — Taqueria San Luis — $1.35

You may have seen the plumes rising from the smokers in front of Carniceria San Luis on Harding Place near I-24. If you’ve been lucky enough to drive by with your window down, you’ve certainly been tempted to pull in for one of the whole chickens that have been cooking roadside. But behind the butcher shop is a window onto all of that goodness: Taqueria San Luis. It is literally just a window — no seats, no entrance, just a small shelf for napkins and some condiments. Most of the tacos, outside of the beef head and beef tripe, are just $1.35 apiece and come with grilled onions heaped on the plate and a jalapeño crema that will set your world on fire. The chorizo, chicken, carne asada and al pastor tacos are all excellent, but the truly adventurous can get tongue or buche (pork stomach) for the same price.
